Lights, Gangs and All That Jazz

Playing out in the township Alexandra, this is a tour like no other!  Lights, Gangs and All That Jazz highlights the culture that exists in ‘Alex’ today and foretells of the inventive possibilities that the future can bring for the area.

Departing from Marlboro Gautrain Station, we head out by local mini-bus taxi to No. 69 12th Avenue.  This Heritage Site was the headquarters of the notorious Msomi Gang who conducted a reign of terror in the area in the 1950s.  A grandson of one of the original gang members gives a personal narration of this history and the building until its transformation into the ‘chesa nyama’ business it is today (Shisa Nyama is a term used in many South African townships to describe a barbecue/braai where friends and families come together to grill meat on an open fire – source Wikipedia).

On 2nd Avenue, Kings Cinema is home to vintage reels of film and original theatre projector (still in working condition) which were viewed by our beloved Nelson Mandela when he lived in Alexandra.  Bombed by apartheid forces in 1984, the theatre was rebuilt and now operates as a venue for hire to the God Never Fails Church.

At our final stop, 7th Avenue we are serenaded by jazz musicians at a local jazz club.  With some luck, you may arrive on a day when they ditch their instruments  – improvising musical instruments with their voices and delivering an incredible acapella performance.

This 3 hour tour departs on Saturdays and Sundays between 14h00 and 17h00 from Marlboro Gautrain Station.  Its a fully guided escorted tour and includes food and refreshments.

Fabulous experience visiting heritage buildings, meeting the local people.  Where today would you visit an old cinema with the original seals and popcorn maker?  The old original posters are still in the entrance.  Finished off at the Jazz Club where all the local musicians meet.  Enjoyed the local cuisine and if you’re adventurous, try the chicken feet!  All part of the great community experience.  Thank you for a great tour.  – Bernadette Nickol

Experience of the Week…Winelands Biking

What’s the first thing that pops into your mind when you think ‘Stellenbosch’?  Wine?!  Not surprising…  This is the town with the oldest wine route and 200 wine farms and estates.  Stellenbosch is also the second oldest town in South Africa and is well known for its beautiful oak lined streets.  In fact, that’s where its name originates from.  The town became known as the City of Oaks or Eikestad in Afrikaans and Dutch due to the large number of oak trees that were planted by its founder, Simon van der Stel.

TownTour1.jpg

A town of many names, it’s also commonly referred to as ‘Stellies’ and in spite of its historic background, remains a vibrant young town which can be attributed to it being a University Town.  Walk down the tree lined streets and watch out for falling acorns!

Want an unusual way to experience the sights and scents of Stellenbosch?

Perfect for those who have limited time in the wine lands, this tour packs the best of Stellenbosch into half a day of laid-back cycling.

Experience of the Week…Cape Malay Cooking Safari

Get to know aspects of the cultural diversity that Cape Town has to offer on this interactive guided walk through the historical heart of the Bo-Kaap with a cooking safari.

-009254-009255-009285-009291

The vibrant area of the Bo-Kaap is the oldest residential area in Cape Town.  The brilliantly coloured homes and cobbled streets make it one of the most photographed areas in Cape Town.

Bo Kaap Cape Town ssimg_036

The focus lies on the Cape Muslim people with their South-East Asian heritage, their culture, their community and their food and links between these.

Stop at a local spice shop and Halaal butcher, interacting with locals and discovering typical Malay ingredients.

-009336-009273

Visit a local family’s home and participate in a hands-on fun-filled cooking session and demonstration before savouring a full traditional lunch.  We learn how to mix Masala, fold Samoosas, and how to balance the delicate flavours of a Cape Malay curry.  Over a glass of faloodah (a traditional, lightly rose-scented milk drink) our hostess and cooking instructor will tell you more about the ways in which food, history and religion are interwoven in the Bo-Kaap culture.

Thompsons Africa Supporting Communities

Proud supporters of Siyaphambili Support Centre, Thompsons Africa donated 60 stationery packs to Siyaphambili this morning.  This stationery will be handed to 60 of the kids they support. What an emotional and HAPPY experience!

20190207_140935.jpgThe organization is an NPO and was founded by Mama Zodwa, a retired nurse.

20190208_090814.jpg

They provide home-based care services for sick people and support for their vulnerable family members (mostly children and grandmothers). They bathe them and ensure that they adhere to their treatment regimens. They also run a daily soup kitchen for orphans and vulnerable children. There are about 60 children who receive at least one meal a day from the center and are assisted with their homework.

20190208_091553.jpgThe centre also runs a gardening project and assist individuals who want to apply for identity documents or social grants.

Thompsons Africa is proud to make a difference in the lives of the members of our local community.  Thank you to our Social Responsibility Committee who drive these projects.  #makingusproud

Experience of the Week…White Shark Encounter

We’re diving deep to get the lowdown on one of the ‘scarier’ and largest predators on our planet…. the Great White Shark.

sharkUW2.png

Also known as the great white, white shark or white pointer, the Great White Shark is a species of large mackerel shark.  Its most notable for its impressive and imposing size with some growing to as much as 6 metres in length?!  To put that into perspective, a giraffe may grow to be approximately 6 metres in height!

This impressive marine monster has 300 sharp, triangular teeth arranged in up to seven rows and their streamlined shape and tails can propel them through the water at speeds of over 60 kilometres per hour.

sharkUW1.pngContrary to popular belief, the human is not on their list of preferred fine dining.  Rather, researchers believe that the occasional nibble (there are approximately 5 to 10 attacks throughout the world annually) is largely due to curiosity.  Their preferred diet consists of fish, rays, sea lions, seals and small whales.

clients1clients2Keen to see them up close and personal either above or under water….but from the safety of a boat or cage?

Join us on our White Shark Encounter (including transfers) where you can experience the White Shark in its natural environment and learn more about the mysteries that surround this spectacular creature.   Click here to read more or view rates.  Alternatively, contact a Thompsons Africa consultant today on info@thompsonsafrica.co.za.  Do you dare???

Experience of the Week…The Alba Restaurant Boat

The Alba Restaurant Boat, a first of its kind and the only fine dining restaurant boat in Cape Town takes guests on a tour through the fishing industry and yacht harbour in the V&A Waterfront.

It measures twenty-two meters in length with a six meter beam and has a capacity of seventy-two seats seated guests or a hundred for cocktail functions.

It has been designed to be stable and smooth in the water, with floor to ceiling glass windows, which will ensure a comfortable dining experience with great views regardless of the weather.

Additionally, the Alba is fully compliant with safety regulations of the South African Maritime Authority (SAMSA) and the captain and crew are seasoned veterans, fully qualified to handle a vessel this size. Cruise lengths are two hours, beginning with four cruises a day.  Private charters are available on a request basis.

Expect breath-taking views if the Cape Town skyline from the fully glass-enclosed restaurant boat, including sights like Table Mountain and the sparkling lights of the V&A Harbour at night.

‘Having the opportunity to have a 3-course sailing fine dining experience in the heart of Cape Town – V&A Waterfront Harbour – with Table Mountain as my back drop was world class, a must do experience if I may say so!

The service, food and overall ambience on the boat was of the highest quality. The food and wine pairing was especially well executed. I highly recommend anyone to go on this two- hour fine dining experience and see parts of Cape Town Harbour that are not open to the public, learn about the abundance of history in the harbour from bygone days. A highly recommended worthwhile experience.’ – Craig Drysdale – Thompsons Africa Global Sales Manager
