What’s the first thing that pops into your mind when you think ‘Stellenbosch’? Wine?! Not surprising… This is the town with the oldest wine route and 200 wine farms and estates. Stellenbosch is also the second oldest town in South Africa and is well known for its beautiful oak lined streets. In fact, that’s where its name originates from. The town became known as the City of Oaks or Eikestad in Afrikaans and Dutch due to the large number of oak trees that were planted by its founder, Simon van der Stel.
A town of many names, it’s also commonly referred to as ‘Stellies’ and in spite of its historic background, remains a vibrant young town which can be attributed to it being a University Town. Walk down the tree lined streets and watch out for falling acorns!
