The Greater Makalali Private Nature Reserve is now a Big Five Reserve. Close to 10 years ago, the reserve moved twelve disease free South African buffalo into a 400 hectare breeding enclosure and on the 22nd of June, the herd, now boasting fifty two animals, was released into the Reserve.
This is the first time in more than 100 years that the reserve is home to free roaming buffalo.
In addition, a further three wild dogs were recently released into the Greater Makalali Private Nature Reserve as part of the Wild Dog Range Expansion Project.
As a result of this exciting news, Garonga Safari Camp and Little Garonga now proudly offer an enhanced game viewing experience.
MAKALALI RESERVE – HOEDSPRUIT – SAFARI CAMP
Garonga is situated in the Greater Makalali Private Nature reserve north of Hoedspruit in Limpopo, South Africa. The Reserve is 22,000ha in an incredible natural wilderness area with the Drakensburg Mountains as a backdrop.
All of the big game is present on the reserve as well as an abundance of plains game, black and white rhino, cheetah and hyenas. With only a very few commercial lodges in the reserve, guests are assured of a truly intimate safari experience. Specially conducted walks during safari time are a unique offering at Garonga. As well as safaris, we offer a number of additional activities and facilities including the amazing Star Bath, a Bush Bath, Yoga Sala, Sleepout Experience, massages and microlite flights. Guests can choose to do as little or as much as they want.
Accommodation consists of six luxury tents at Safari Camp, and three luxury suites at Little Garonga; both very different, private and intimate. All tents and rooms are en-suite. Our slogan is ‘Safari For the Soul’ so chill out and relax.
