How We Tread Right

How We Tread Right (HWTR) is The Travel Corporation’s (TTC) new five-year sustainability strategy, which sets the mandate on sustainability at Thompsons Africa and our sister travel companies.

People – community support and cultural preservation by targeting overtourism through the inclusion of new Make Travel Matter experiences, the creation of a standalone strategy to encourage greater diversity and inclusion at Thompsons Africa, and our global give-back efforts.

Wildlife – conservation and protection by targeting animal welfare and conservation, and ethical wildlife experiences through TreadRight’s Animal Welfare Policy.

Our Wheels are Rolling!

Dear Friends Across the World,

While we’ve waited patiently (and admittedly, not always THAT patiently) for the world to return to our beautiful shores, we have been hard at work to ensure that when your guests are ready to travel, we are ready to receive them.

In preparation, we have put together a strict criteria for the hygiene protocols around our fleet of vehicles which we share with you in the below short video.

We were delighted to receive the news from the South African government that we are now moving from Level 3 restrictions to Level 2 restrictions. This means that local South Africans are permitted to travel inter provincially and so….OUR WHEELS ARE ROLLING!

Our fleet of around 170 vehicles ranges from sedans, to two-passenger limousines, 8 seaters, 11 seaters and 15 seaters; luxury 44-seater coaches and 60-seater touring vehicles. This massive tyre-print across the continent also comes with a small carbon footprint and among our innovations is a water recycling plant to provide environmentally friendly washes.

We cannot wait to welcome your guests to our shores once more.

Jonathan Gadiah – Chief Executive Officer – Thompsons Africa

Why Southern Africa should be your first post covid destination for travel

2020 has been a turbulent, uncertain, overwhelming year to say the least! In South Africa, we’re encouraged by the recent announcement of our government that we are moving to Lockdown Level 2 granting South Africans almost full freedom, including the freedom to travel inter-provincially. Zambia too has opened its international borders and in South Africa we wait patiently for the day our borders too are opened and we can welcome your guests back to our beautiful shores.

Although not all open yet, the borders WILL open! Where will you go? Where will you send your guests? Landscapes, cultures, enriching experiences and incredible wildlife…. Africa has it all. And in a world where wide open spaces, fresh air and the opportunity to ‘disconnect’ will be more important than ever, South Africa and Southern Africa are a natural first choice.

Outdoor adventure, safari and beach

According to Getaway, 600 participating people, largely from Europe, voted South Africa as their post-coronavirus TOP SPOT destination to travel to!

Those who participated in the booking company survey said that their top destination experiences included outdoor adventure, safari and beach.  Its not hard then to see why South Africa nabbed the coveted first place position!

Outdoor adventure is the most desired experience travellers long for, followed by safari and beach getaways.

Southern Africa’s vast open spaces allow for low people densities.

Widely spaced and private accommodation

Most lodges and camps offer secluded, private accommodation. Well spaced guest areas ensure comfortable, secluded and private experiences. Suites and facilities are generously spaced for guest comfort and peace of mind and to accommodate limited social contact. Most safari experiences allow for just six guests (where possible) on a safari vehicle.

Outdoor (or appropriately spaced) dining

Thoughtful consideration is given to dining setups with ample space between tables. Many lodges offer outdoor dining options which are widely spaced with plenty of fresh air.

Contributing to conservation

When you travel and stay at a Southern Africa lodge, you are directly contributing to the support of both wildlife and local communities. Conservation and park fees pay for the efforts behind conserving our wildlife as well as all anti-poaching efforts.

Tourism also supports local communities with many individuals employed by the camps and lodges. In addition, many properties support local empowerment programmes in the neighboring villages thereby supporting and uplifting communities. This is a key incentive for guests who have an interest in ensuring that their travels sustain the future of the destinations they travel to.

With boundless opportunities for travellers, South Africa and Southern Africa offer a myriad of opportunities for safe exploration… And we can’t wait to welcome them!

When the world is ready to travel again, we will be waiting.

World first. Conservationists release seven pangolins back into the wild where they were previously extinct.

What a wonderful thing to be celebrating.  As people yearn to travel, we are certain that experiences connecting travellers to the conservation of our earth and wildlife will begin to play a key role in choosing just where to go.  Southern Africa offers it all.  Ask us how to tailor a holiday that offers both ample time for relaxation but also, an opportunity to make a difference.

In a world first, conservationists have managed to successfully release seven Temminck’s (ground) pangolins back into the wild where they were previously extinct.  These pangolins are the first to exist in Kwa-Zulu Natal since the 1980s. Each with their own tragic story, they were all rescued through the combined efforts of the African Pangolin Working Group, police units belonging to the Endangered Species Unit, Organised Crime and K9, as well as the Green Scorpions and the Hawks. Often without food and water for up to two weeks and with underlying health issues, these particular pangolins were rehabilitated at the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital. Pangolin releaseOnce fully rehabilitated, four females and three males were selected for release as part of a long term project to establish a viable population of pangolins in Kwa-Zulu Natal.  Because releasing pangolins back into the wild is a challenging process, their release site needed to be carefully assessed.  Three key factors needed to be taken into account.  The size of the release site, the presence of an on the ground monitoring team and access to food.  Pangolins travel vast distances, particularly when released into a new environment.  Constant monitoring to track their movements is key to ensuring that they don’t wander off into nearby community areas of farms.  Additionally, monitoring their overall health and progress in general is extremely important.  The pangolin diet consists of termites and ants and previous attempts to release pangolin have failed purely because they were unable to find food in their new locations.  These particular pangolins were acclimatized to their new home with daily ‘walks’ to ensure they would easily adapt and find food. Fitting trackerTrackerTwo tracking devices were attached to each animal and have been extensively monitored for several months.  Sadly two pangolins did not survive, one succumbing to illness and the other killed by a crocodile. Pangolin finalWe are extremely excited to watch the progress of the remaining five pangolins and even more excited that they are homed in our own ‘backyard’, Kwa-Zulu Natal.  Long term plans are in place for more of these scaly creatures to be released in the northern sections of Kwa-Zulu Natal.  Congratulations to all involved in this wonderful conservation success story!

When you’re ready, we’ll be waiting!  #wewillbewaiting.
